Tips From A Teacher...

Do you struggle with your child when it comes to homework time?  Here are a few tips that may help them (and you) get through homework and studying sessions a little happier!

1. Have them work on homework in CHUNKS! - Our brains can literally hold only so much (yes there is a reason why we cannot remember what we went upstairs for...the 3rd time!) If you child is learning new information, they can only soak in 10-15 minutes worth before they have to do something with it. Otherwise, just like a sponge, it will not take in any more information and be able to store it. So, have them work on studying spelling words or their notes for that upcoming social studies test for 10-15 minutes and then give them a break! Before they break (breaks need only be a minute or two), have them tell you 3 things that they just learned from their notes! Not only does this help to move what they have learned into long term memory, but it frees up their brain to learn more! In addition, it gives you the opportunity to check to make sure that they are actually learning something and the info is correct!

2. Incorporate an exercise ball! - By replacing the chair that your child is using while doing homework, you are giving them all kinds of benefits. First, the movement that sitting on the ball stimulates will help get their blood flowing. Now they should not be bouncing so much that they cannot read a book, but just enough so that they moving and able to read with no problem. Blood flow makes you smarter! It is a proven fact! You learn better when you are moving and just after you have been moving! (If only our teachers would have realized that!) The more blood flow you have going to your brain, the better your brain will work! Plus, they are strengthening their core (this works for mommy too!) and getting rid of some of that energy that has been building up by sitting all day! It is a win-win for everyone!

3. Keep them HYDRATED! - One of the worst things that we can do to ourselves is to get dehydrated. Have you had that fuzzy head feeling (ok, not after a night out on the town!) where you just keep forgetting things? (ok, I guess this is not a fair question for any mom that has not gotten a real night's sleep in a while) As you probably know, our brains (and body for that matter) are made mostly of water. When we do not get enough water, our organs cannot work to their full potential. One of the biggest things that our brains need is water to be sure that all of those messages go to the right place. Keeping your child hydrated is one of the best things that you can do for their education! Some school districts have taken hold of this concept and are allowing students to have water bottles in the classroom. I personally feel that we are doing kids disservice if we don't. However, in this day and age, there is a worry that some will come into school with something other than water. Whatever your school's policy, teach your children to take advantage of the trips to the water fountain when they are given to them! When they are home, have them drink as much water before, during, and after studying and doing homework!
